Private Zone won the six-furlong G1 Vosburgh H. at Belmont on September 28 in stakes-record time of 1:08.02 over favored Justin Phillip. He is owned by Good Friends Stable, bred by Adena Springs, and trained by Doug O’Neill. Private Zone was a champion 2-year-old colt in Panama after winning the Clasico Francisco Arias Paredes y Alberto Arias Espinos (a G1 race in Panama only).
Mucho Macho Man won the G1 Awesome Again S. at nine furlongs at Santa Anita by 4 1/4 lengths. He is owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, bred by John and Carole Rio, and trained by Katherine Ritvo. Â This was the five-year-old’s first G1 victory, but he was beaten only a head by Fort Larned in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2012 and was third in the 2011 Kentucky Derby.
Both of these G1 winners are by the Adena Springs stallion Macho Uno.
Macho Uno is perhaps best known as being champion 2-year-old in 2000, defeating future Horse of the Year Point Given in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He also won the G1 Grey S. at Woodbine and finished a fine third to the brilliant 2-year-old City Zip in the G1 Hopeful S. at Saratoga. He went on to win the G2 Massachusetts Handicap and G3 Pennsylvania Derby, and was third in the Suburban H. and Ohio Derby, both G2 races.
Macho Uno is arguably the best racing offspring of Horse of the Year Holy Bull (sire of G1 winners Giacomo, Flashy Bull, and Confessional). Macho Uno’s dam, Primal Force, is also famous as one of the few mares with two Breeders’ Cup  winners; her other is Classic winner Awesome Again, by Deputy Minister.
Macho Uno retired to stud for the 2004 season and his first foals raced in 2007. He finished fifth on the freshman sire list with two SWs, including G1 winner Wicked Style (winner of the Breeders’ Futurity on the artificial surface at Keeneland). His best runner from that crop would turn out to be the older male Macho Again (winner of the G1 Stephen Foster H.). Other SWs from that crop included Canadian classic winner Harlem Rocker.
With seven crops of racing age, Macho Uno has sired an excellent 75% starters, 56% winners, 18% 2YO winners, and a solid 5% SWs. His starters average $69,000 in earnings, which is excellent.
Macho Uno also sires versatile winners. Over 20% of his SWs have been on the turf and 25% on an artificial surface. However, at this time, all four of his G1 winners are males. The average winning distance of his progeny is just under eight furlongs. Several of his SWs won at six furlongs (including Kays and Jays and Uno Caliente) and several at nine furlongs (including Macho Again and Pursue a Dream).
Macho Uno stands at Adena Springs Farm in Kentucky, where his 2013 fee was $20,000.
